While new born babies lie in the sling like it's a hammock, once your child starts to sit up they can be carried on your hip using your sling as a support.

newborns and small babies

Step One
With the fold of the baby sling facing down, place the sling over one shoulder, while resting on the alternate hip (alternate shoulders from time-to-time for optimal spinal health). Twist the sling so that the seam at the widest part of the garment is halfway between your bellybutton and hip. Adjust the baby sling so that it is flat across your back and shoulder.

Step Two
Holding baby securely, open the pocket of the sling and place baby’s bottom onto the inside of the seam at the widest part of the garment. Baby should now be facing towards the hip your sling is resting on.

Step Three
Still holding baby securely, gently lower baby into a lying position deep within the sling. Baby’s head should rest near your heart. At around three or four months babies carried in this position may prefer to sit forward with their legs crossed so they can see out of the sling. To soothe baby, begin gentle movement.

older babies (up to 12kg)

Step One
With the fold of the sling facing down, place the sling over one shoulder, while resting on the alternate hip (when using the sling as an infant carrier alternate shoulders from time-to-time for optimal spinal health). Twist the sling so that the seam at the widest part of the garment is halfway between your bellybutton and hip. Adjust the sling so that it is flat across your back and shoulder.

Step Two
Using both hands, place baby on the hip the sling is resting on.

Step Three
Holding baby securely, pull the fabric of the sling under baby’s bottom to create a seat from the sling, aligning baby’s spine with the seam at the widest part of the sling. Baby’s legs should hang either side of your waist, outside of the infant carrier.

safe baby wearing

Your sling is not a protective device. As babies are precious, please make sure you carry yours with care, applying the same safety principles when using your sling as you would when carrying a baby in your arms. In particular:

  • Always ensure baby’s face and airways are unobstructed so baby can breathe
  • Support baby with at least one hand at all times.Do not place objects in your sling while carrying baby
  • Never leave baby unattended in the sling
  • Carefully inspect your sling before each use and discard if there are any signs of damage e.g. loose seams, tears or runs
  • Do not modify your sling in any way prior to use
  • Do not use sling if your baby’s weight exceeds 12kg
  • Slings are designed for use while walking only: never use your sling while jogging, running, riding a bicycle, or in a moving vehicle. Baby carriers are not substitutes for approved car seats
  • Be aware that toddlers in slings may be at reaching distance to potentially dangerous objects; ensure you keep them at an arm’s distance from potential hazards
  • Wear baby cautiously in the kitchen: keeping baby away from hot and sharp objects. Avoid hot drinks when wearing baby
  • When wearing baby, bend at the knees, not at the waist
  • When going through doorways or around corners, be careful that baby’s body does not stick out past your arm and strike the wall or doorjamb
